Sundays At MoCCA!

Like Sean said before, SUNDAYS SOLD OUT! We’ll have more copies soon and they will be available at
*Copies are now available at:

I Know Joe Kimpel.com

This post was taken from my own blog. I’ve taken out everything that doesn’t pertain to Sundays though. I think.

Here we go:

MoCCA 2007

Sundays Sold OUT!

It was a solid two days of traffic as buzz built around the book. Thanks to all of our friends who sent people to our table, or told them to stop by, you guys are the best. Special thanks to James Sturm for personally bringing people to the table several times; and to the CCS table for being our buddies across the way, we sent people to you and we know you sent people to us.

It would be easy for us to milk the interest in CCS and use that as a platform to toss our books out there, but the fact is that the books we students are putting out are really good! The quality of stories, art and production are right there among the best at the show, and we’ve only just begun.

MoCCA took place in four rooms just like this one. It was huge and bright and white. Like a comics heaven.

MoCCA 07 (9)
“Hey guy. What’dya doin over there? D’you wanna comics? D’you wanna large format comics? Where you goin?”

MoCCA 07 (10)
Medusa, the book unfolding out onto the floor, sold out! It was written by our Jess and drawn by Alex. It was great, a real involving read with the format and flowing artwork and language.

MoCCA 07 (13)
Alec Longstreth and James Sturm talk. About what, I wasn’t privileged enough to know.

MoCCA 07 (15)
The one and only Rich Tommaso came over to our table early to check out Sundays, but was unimpressed with the size…

MoCCA 07 (14)
I mean, look at the size of his pages of original art!

MoCCA 07 (19)
I continued to take as many pictures as I could, trying to document the weekend, but I wasn’t the only one:

MoCCA 07 (21)
Chuck gave me a taste of my own medicine. It was sweet and filling.

MoCCA 07 (22)
The show filled up soon, and remained constant.

MoCCA 07 (23)

MoCCA 07 (24)
The one and only Sam Gaskin had a good show with his Pizza Wizard debuting. It was easily one of my favorite books of the show.

MoCCA 07 (26)
The Sundays table was right up against the One Percent Press table. We were one big comics family.

MoCCA 07 (28)
In addition to carrying the 54-page 11 x 17 inch anthology masterpiece Sundays, the table also had books by each of the co-editors. It was a handsome table, made only handsomer by the handsome folk behind the table.

MoCCA 07 (30)
Here’s Alexis Frederick-Frost, CCS grad and author of Maria of Montmarte and La Primavera with his wife Kristen, and myself, the third-wheel.

MoCCA 07 (34)
One Percent Press, Sundays table neighbors matched!

MoCCA 07 (35)
That’s Becca giving Alex her, “You think you’re sooo funny” face.

MoCCA 07 (42)

MoCCA 07 (43)
Sundays was only 10 bucks at MoCCA, and you got a free screen-printed bag to carry all of your wares in. It will be 12 on IKnowJoeKimpel.com in a couple of weeks. But still well worth it. And you may even get some free sketches or comics along with it.

MoCCA 07 (44)
The second day started with a cookie for Chuck.

MoCCA 07 (48)
Kenny Dahly playing the banjo between rows.

MoCCA 07 (52)
WOO! Alex sells the very last copy of Sundays to some guy!

MoCCA 07 (53)
Alexis sells and signs his very last copy of Maria of Montmartre to some guy!

MoCCA 07 (54)
Ken Dahl sells a copy of Monsters #2 to some lady, who was a huge fan. Of the comic, or the mustache? We’ll never know.

MoCCA 07 (58)
The famous Clutch McBastard karate chopped my face off when I asked how he thought the show was going.

MoCCA 07 (59)
We made free sketch bookmarks for people at the Sundays table,

MoCCA 07 (60)
While Kenneth grabbed up the free wraps at the end of the show,

MoCCA 07 (62)
Jeff kept an eye Loked down on Charlito. A man of fierce loyalty, Jeff made sure Charlito didn’t talk no jive to his Sundays Brothers Sean or Chuck.

MoCCA 07 (63)
Sean, one of Sundays’ editors is a man of class and disguise.

MoCCA 07 (70)
Thanks to everyone who made this weekend amazing.

MoCCA was a blast! The first print run of the Sundays Anthology sold out, but Editorial is planning to go back to press immediately and make copies available on I Know Joe Kimpel by the end of the week. We just want as many people who want to to be able to see this book.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported and visited us at MoCCA. It was an unbelievable weekend on several levels and I’m sure the other editors will chime in with their reports soon.

Keep checking out this blog for more Sundays news. We’ll let you know here when the book is available online and we’ll keep posting info about the talented contributors roster.

A special thanks to Heidi MacDonald, who mentioned Sundays several times on The Beat and helped spread the word. I got to meet Heidi for the first time this weekend and she’s great. Thanks to all who helped spread the word.

Favorite book from MoCCA so far: Jamie Tanner’s The Aviary, but I’ve barely scratched the surface of a huge stack of books.

Stay tuned, there’s more Sundays info to come. Thanks again.

The books are bound, the car has been started and the good ship Sundays is about to set sail for MoCCA. Wow, that sounded bad. But we’ll be there Saturday morning, bright and early. See you at MoCCA, folks… just look for this banner, hanging from Table A45 in the main ballroom on the first floor…

sundaysbannerphoto.jpg

or look for this cover…

suncover-big.jpg

or look for these people, hopefully more well rested…

or look for Alex playing with Joe’s corpse…

img_2073.jpg

or follow the trail of happy customers who look like this!

Thanks for reading and enjoy. There’ll be more updates on Sundays news here in the coming days and weeks… did someone say sequel? Animated series? Action figures? No. No one said any of those things. YET.

Also, if for some reason you can’t make it to MoCCA, Sundays will be available at I Know Joe Kimpel directly after MoCCA. So, if you don’t have IKJK bookmarked - do it now.

Alex Kim Loses His Mind, Also, He Finally Finished Those 1400 Screen Prints We Asked Him For

So, we’ve, uh, been asking a lot of Alex screen print-wise lately. To the tune of, like, well over 1000 screen prints on the front, back and inside covers of the Sundays Anthology. I also had him screen print some puppy drawings on socks. We thought he could handle it.

Unfortunately, it seems that late last night, Alex snapped and killed the talented young cartoonist Joe Lambert. On the bright side, anyone who owns Joe Lambert originals now stands to make a pretty penny. The below photos will probably have some sort of legal ramification for Alex. Sorry, Dee Oh Double Gee, implement cruise control.

On the bright side, the cover for the Sundays anthology is all done!

Denis St. John Likes Monsters

DSJM

“Denis St. John! The one and only! You just don’t know it yet. That’s how Denis, and Denis’ comics carry themselves. The covers to Denis’ comics proclaim, “A Denis St. John Production.” I’ve developed a theory about why. Okay. Here goes. One reason to make comics is so you don’t have to make a movie. Movies are hard. First, find financial backing (virtually impossible for a neophyte filmmaker with nothing but a shooting script and a unique vision with unique life experiences to draw upon), get a crew together, spend weeks casting actors and actressess — most of whom you’re not going to like — and upwards of months in some horrible place, where EVERY surrounding thing has to be approved to be in the movie, or changed, or painted this shade of red instead of that one, and at the end of it all, you have to actually make the fucker inside some sweaty editing room. Why? Why not make a comic? Because comics are harder, that’s why. And Denis St. John would like to be making animated movies in a 1960’s studio, or a John K studio. He can’t anymore. So he’s making comics. Denis might draw more than anyone I know. He’s intent on making comics that are personal visions. It’s like pop culture used him, and now he’s using it. Check it out.” - Jeff Lok

Ken Dahl aka Gabby Schulz aka The Fellow aka The Assassin

Monsters 2

“Ken Dahl’s comics should be in the hands of children. They’re infantile? Hardly. Sure, they have genitalia, farts, and a feature called, “Say Something Funny” wherein people inevitably can’t, at which point their heads explode. But it’s what you do with that. Ken Dahl’s comics should be in the hands of children because he knows the names of the things that this country did wrong. His insight into society is based on what our culture has done wrong to him, personally, and his family members, and that’s where he gets his fury. It’s a funny fury, fortunately. We do Jam comics a lot. Often at Denny’s. Gabby’s the go-to. If there’s never been a Jam comic that did not turn filthy, then there’s never been a panel of a Jam comic filther than his. They have a quality that makes people recall them, recoiling and laughing, to others when he’s not around. He does autobio, but he doesn’t write about his mornings, or how cute his significant other is when she’s at the sink, doing the same things everyone does. He writes about going to jail. About how he got herpes and lost the love of his life because of it. Buy his comics at www.iknowjoekimpel.com. He’s already the #1 seller there. Catch him before he rises into the dawn.” - Jeff Lok

“The staff at Sundays HQ has entered heavy duty production mode. All the art is in and we are clocking in at 54 pages. Our editorial staff has been up all night, some of us multiple nights screenprinting, drawing covers, lettering, laying out the pages, as well as working on our individual books for the MoCCA art festival. We have passed the critical phase of feeling more in control than out. Steve Bissette delivered his page to us about 12 hours ago and it is beautiful! Thanks Steve! JP Coovert from One Percent Press dropped in and lent a hand. We bought JP a box of Swiss Cake Rolls to show our gratification for his help. Best $1.29 we ever spent, I say. We took a few photos so you folks at home can play along. Thanks for reading!” - Chuck Forsman

Special Announcement

We’ll have more on this later, but it’s on the net, so we might as well spread the word. As mentioned earlier, Steve Bissette has contributed a page to the Sundays Anthology. Let’s let him spill the news:

“I’ve just returned home from CCS, where I delivered my self-standing one-page story for the Sundays anthology (which Sam Gaskin referred to this week in his interview; you’ll be reading more about in this weekend’s interview with CCS senior Alex Joon Kim). Alex, Joe Lambert and Chuck Forsman were there to receive it, and all seemed very pleased with it –
– my first new Tyrant page for publication in over ten years!

That’s all I’ll say for now.”

Dane Martin

Before discussing the human wonder known as Dane Martin, we’d first like to offer our apologies for not updating the blog more often. But we’ve been extremely busy printing and screenprinting and coordinating and putting together what is undeniably turning into a great collection. We’ll have a special announcement soon about a special page we just received, a page so big that it could only involve, well, you’ll see…

But now, enter the wacky world of Dane Martin… if ye dare…

DaneMartin1Cover-large

“Knowing Dane Martin is nineteen years old makes the first time you encounter one of his comics, or something he wrote all the more, I wouldn’t say impressive.
All the more shocking’s more like it. It’s like he developed in a coccoon containing nothing but collections of humorous plays from the 1930’s. Likewise when he tells you he’s the son of a carpet salesman. He is. He tells stories about his crazy encounters with homeless people, and says, “And he talked like this!” Only, he gives everyone the same two voices. There’s a raspy, vulgar immigrant voice, or a raspy, vulgar effeminate voice.

As far as I know, this is actually how he percieves the world. Suffice to say, he’s a most unique nineteen year old. His comics voice is fully developed. His comics are insane, yet their internal logic is inscrutable. That, and they’re hilarious. He has one billion websites and blogs. Just Google “Dane Martin,” and enter a world more enjoyable than our own… or follow this link or maybe this one.” - Jeff Lok, who once had internet access.

Also, be sure to catch Steve Bissette’s interview with the talented Colleen Frakes, one of our esteemed contributors.

Morgan Pielli

morgan_building.jpg

Morgan Pielli’s another one. From his and Colleen’s continued Herculean efforts, I’d guess they’d slept 2 hours between the two of them. Wednesday nights are deadline nights. An often heard question on Wednesday late afternoon and night is, “How’s Morgan doing?”

The reply is always different. “He still has to ink 16 pages.” “He’s almost done. He has to finish pencilling, and do all the inking, but he’s almost done.”

For his final project for James’s class he made a box set of his comics, with a printed hardcover box which would not have looked out of place in the Criterion Collection. He glued 30 of them together, in one night. While finishing his comic, while getting them all printed.

I’ll never forget walking into Imprint - the cheapest place for copies in the Upper Valley - with Penina to make copies of both our books, and seeing Morgan and his roommate, Chris giving instructions to the Imprint folks. They’d been sequestered into a side office, because in the main room Imprint were getting three new machines in, rearranging their office, and training two new people. They were also trying to find Morgan’s application, which he’d given them months ago.

Morgan’s website is:

Dancing Paper Clip

His comics are available on I Know Joe Kimpel.Com
